24V vs 230V Gate Motor: What Is the Difference?

A 24 V DC motor gives finer control of speed and force and, on many models, can run from a backup battery during a power cut. A 230 V AC motor runs straight from the mains, sometimes with more torque, and is opened by hand with its release when the power fails. Choose by use, power cuts and site.

Both types connect to the same 230 V supply at your property. The difference is the motor. A 24 V operator’s control board turns mains power into low voltage for the motor, while a 230 V operator runs its motor on mains voltage. BFT’s DEIMOS BT range, for example, has a 230 V board feeding a 24 V operator. It is the same question as AC vs DC gate motors. Here is what it means in practice, with examples from our sliding gate motor and swing gate motor ranges.

What happens in a power cut?

CAME notes that one advantage of 24 V systems is that, in some cases, they keep working through an outage on emergency batteries. Somfy’s Comfort pack for the IXENGO L 24V includes a backup battery, and Nice’s L-FAB catalogue page lists the PS324, a 24 V battery with an integrated charger, among its accessories. Centurion’s D5-Evo goes further: its 12 V motor always runs from a battery that the mains keeps charged, and Centurion gives 35 to 44 operations on a 7 Ah battery for a 4 m gate. A 230 V motor stops when the mains fails, so you open the gate by hand with its release key.

Which handles a busy gate better?

Duty is published per model, so compare figures rather than assume. Within one family the 24 V version often comes out ahead. Nice rates the LFAB4024 for 60 cycles per hour against 20 for the 230 Vac LFAB4000, and LIFE gives 80% intermittence for the 24 V ERGO against 35% for its 230 V ER4 UNI, ER4L UNI and ER4B. BFT rates its 24 V DEIMOS BT operators for intensive use and the 230 V DEIMOS AC A800 for semi-intensive use. Mains models are rated too, such as S3 30% for the 230 V FAAC 415, so read the data sheet for any gate that runs many times an hour.

Soft stop, encoders and obstacle detection

A 24 V motor is driven electronically, which makes it easier for the board to slow the leaf near each end and to sense resistance. CAME says 24 V DC motors allow more precise electronic control of movement, though exact performance depends on the operator and board. It shows in the specifications: the CAME AXL has an encoder, the LFAB4024 a magnetic encoder, and BFT’s DEIMOS BT uses d-track impact reaction with slowdown. Many 230 V motors have good control as well; the BFT PHOBOS AC A50 has an electronic clutch and slowdown, so check the feature you need on the sheet.

When does 230V make more sense?

  • Windy sites: Nice advises its 230 Vac L-FAB models for windy areas, and in that family the 230 V version has more torque, 500 Nm against 300 Nm.
  • Long, heavy swing leaves: the 230 V PHOBOS AC A50 is rated for leaves up to 5 m and 500 kg.
  • Gates used now and then, where power cuts are rare and opening by hand with the release is acceptable.
  • Replacing a 230 V motor on an existing system that stays in place.

With identical gate limits, the choice comes down to power cuts, daily use and the board. Nice’s L-FAB pair makes the same point for underground motors; see our ram vs arm guide for how motor type is chosen.

How to choose

  1. How many times the gate runs on a busy day
  2. How often your area loses power, and whether the gate must work during an outage
  3. How exposed the site is to wind, and the leaf size
  4. Which board and remotes you already have, if you are replacing a motor

Installation by our team includes a 1-year installation warranty plus one free maintenance visit, and every motor carries a separate 1-year product warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 24V gate motor better than 230V?

Neither is better for every gate. A 24 V motor suits busy gates and owners who want battery backup and smooth, controlled movement. A 230 V motor suits windy sites and gates where opening by hand during a power cut is acceptable. Compare the data sheets of the models you are considering.

What happens to an automatic gate in a power cut?

A 230 V motor stops until the power returns, so you open the gate by hand with its release. Many 24 V motors can keep running for a number of cycles on a backup battery, if one is fitted. Without a battery, a 24 V motor also has to be released by hand.

Does a 24V gate motor need a transformer?

Not a separate one in most cases. The control board takes 230 V mains and supplies 24 V to the motor, as on BFT’s DEIMOS BT range. Some low-voltage systems differ: Centurion’s D5-Evo Low-Voltage takes 15 to 19 V AC from a step-down transformer inside the dwelling.

Can I add a battery to a 230V gate motor?

It depends on the model. The battery options makers document for the models we list are for 24 V or battery-driven systems, such as Somfy’s IXENGO L 24V pack and Centurion’s D5-Evo. If backup matters, choosing a 24 V motor is normally simpler, so ask us about your model.

Which is better for a gate that opens many times an hour?

Check each model’s rated duty. In several families the 24 V version is rated higher, for example 60 cycles per hour for Nice’s LFAB4024 against 20 for the 230 V LFAB4000. Busy community and staff gates need a model rated for intensive use.
